Presented by Professor Mohamed Gamal Abdelmonem Chair in Architecture & Director, Centre for Architecture, Urbanism and Global Heritage & University Lead, Global Heritage Research Theme, Nottingham Trent University
This talk addresses the mutual impact of destroyed historic buildings and the urban fabric of Old Mosul on the disappearance of the city’s long cultural and traditional practices. With many initiatives focused on reconstruction and restoration projects, little attention is made to the fast disappearing ways of everyday life in the historic city. Professor Abdelmonem argues that local communities’ stories, practices, and initiatives on the ground became critical voices of resistance against currents of modernisation, commercialisation and changing identities in rebuilding post-war Mosul.
